Family of Sigurdur Sigurdsson & Gudfinna Thorfinsdottir
Our paternal fourth great grandfather, Sigurdur Sigurdsson was born to Sigurdur Olafsson and Gudfinna Thorfinsdottir at Langanesi, Nordur Thingeyjarsysla, Iceland. The baby boy, the couples first born, was christened the same day. The couple had at least four other children, with at least one dying in infancy.
On September 18, 1791, Sigurdur Sigurdsson a Bóndi (farmer) á Skálum á Langanesi in Island (Iceland) married Astridur Olafsdottir, a daughter of Olafur Einarsson (b.1740) and Gudrun Jonsdottir (b.1740). Astridur, our paternal fourth great grandmother, was born in 1765 in Fremri, Hlid, Vopnfjord, Iceland. Astridur and Sigurdur were married at Saudanes in Nordur Thingeyjarsysla; she was 26 and he was 28. The couple had several children: Olafur (b. 1792), Jon (b. 1793), Jon “annar” (b. 1794), Sigurdur (b.1796), Gudrun (also born in 1796), Bjorg (b. 1799), Jon “yngri” (b.1799), Josef (b.1800), and Kristjan (b.1801). Their father, Sigurdur died on April 25 of 1805 in Skalar, Saudanes and was buried at Saudanes on April 30th. Sigurdur’s widow Astridur was left with nine children to raise, the eldest being only 13 and the youngest 4. Much of the farm responsibilities must have fallen on the two eldest boys (Olafur and Jon).
Jon “annar” Sigurdsson was born on the 08th of July 1794 in Skalar, Saudanes in Nordur Thingeyjarsysla, Iceland. On August 20 of 1817, Jon, now of Kumlavik (heimajord) Saudanessokn, “a farmer of live agriculture” married Thordys Eymundsdottir at Ytri Lon, Saudanes. Thordys, our third great grandmother, was born and christened on May 06 of 1799 at Ytri-Lon. Thordys was one of at least six children: Eymundur (b.1794), Malfridur (b. 1795), Helge (b.1797), Thordys (b. 1799), Malfridur (b.1799) and Helga (b.1800) born to Eymundur Eymundsson (1771-1826) and Thorgerdur Helgadottir (1767-1840) of Ytri-Lon (outer lagoon).
Family of Jon Sigurdsson & Thordys Eymundssdottir
According to the 1840 census of Kumlavik, Jon “John”, at age 47 and his wife Thordys “Thordis”, age 42 had six children Eymundur , Sigurdur, Thorgerdur, Bjorg, Sigridur and Astridur.between 1818 and 1835.
On the 23 of September 1843, Eymundur Jonsson, the first born son of John and Thordis married Steinunn Sveinsdottir (born 14 January 1823) of Kollavik, Langanesi, Nordur Thingeyjarsysla. Eymundur and Steinun had five sons: Eirikur (1844-1927), Sigurdur (1847-1886), Jon (1850-1907), Eymundur (1853-1912), Olafur Frimann (1862-) and three daughters (Thordys (1854-), Gudrun Juliana (1857-) and Kristbjorg (1861-1865).
On 14 February 1868, Steinunn passed away, she was only 45. Steinunn was one of at least five children born to Sveinn Sveinsson (1792-1862), Bóndi (farmer) í Kollavík í Þistilfirði og Bakka á Strönd, and Gudrun Gudmundsdottir (1793-1842).
Family of Olafur Mikael Jonsson & Abigael Jonsdottir
Our amma’s father Tryggvi Olafsson (Olafson) was born in Svalbard, Thistilfird in Nordur Pingeyarsysla, Iceland on the 09th of July in 1858. Tryggvi was the only child of Olafur Mikael Jonsson and Abigael Jonsdottir. Tryggvi’s mother, Abigael, was born on the 21 May of 1832. Abigael was christened on the 25th of May at Hvarf, Bardardal. Abigael and Olafur were married on October 04 1857 at Svalbard I Thistilfirdi, Nordur-Thingeyjarsysla, Iceland where they lived at the time of Tryggvi’s birth. Sadly, Tryggvi was yet an infant when Abigael passed away (1859). Abigael was a daughter of Jon “yngri” Jonsson and Bothyldur Bjornsdottir of Lundarbrekka, Sudar Thingeyjarsysla.
Family of Gudmundur Jonsson & Gudrun Jonsson
Our amma’s mother, Bergljot “Berglaug” Gudmundsdottir, was also born in Svalbard, on January 25 1854, she was christened the following day at Thistilfird. Berglaug was a daughter of Gudmundur Jonsson and Gudrun Jonsdottir of Syðralón Heimajörd, Sauðanessókn, Þingeyjarsýsla. Berglaug was one of at least ten children born to Gudmundur and Gudrun.
Berglaug and Tryggvi are said to have been married in Iceland on October 14 1882. Vesturfaraskra (p.346) shows the couple as emigrating from Iceland (Kuda, Svalbard) at Vopnafjordur aboard the Cameons in 1882. Tryggvi was 23 and Berglaug was 21, the destination noted is Quebec, Canada.
